Pantone Colour of the Year 2021

Pantone has scoured the world and announced it's 2021 colour of the year - a tradition of the last 20 years. Is it one you knew about? In unusual times, Pantone has made an unusual choice, perhaps with a little more retrospection than is usual. With the two colours chosen this year, Pantone are sending us a message of 'positivity', 'fortitude' and 'optimism'. Just what we need!

And the Pantone Colour of the Year is (well it's two this year actually!)...

But who or what is 'Pantone' and how does the 'Colour of the Year' affect me? Let's find out...

Pantone, as it exists today, was founded in 1962 when it was bought by Lawrence Herbert. Herbet developed the first colour matching system in 1963. These Panttone colours (typically referred to as PMS) are the backbone of the design industry, allowing precise, industry standard colour matching around the world. 

The Pantone Guides are a series of related colour swatches which are bound into a small flipbook (a little bit like a paint chart you may pick up at a DIY shop).

PMS colors are almost always used in branding and have even found their way into government legislation! In January 2003, the Scottish Parliament debated a petition to define the blue in the Scottish Flag (The Saltire) as ‘Pantone 300’!

For over 20 years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design. You will be surprised how the Pantone Colour of the Year has made its way into your home without you realising - you may even have created your own felted pieces in the Pantone yellow and grey!

How is the Pantone Colour of the Year decided?

Pantone’s colour experts comb the world looking for colour influences to arrive at the selection each year. This can include the entertainment industry, films in production, art collections, new artists, fashion, as well as new lifestyles and socio-economic conditions. In short all areas that influence design!
