Simon Brown - The Gentleman Felter
Simon Brown is a needle felting artist from a small village on the coast of Northumbria. He describes his environment as being surrounded by "castles, cats and copious amounts of tea!" We can't think of anything better!
Simons work is a wonderful menagerie of delicate, life like creatures brought to life through needle felting wool. Many of his wonderful creatures find a home on battered old brushes to which he gives a new and purposeful existence.
Simon's work is compelling, sensitive and a feast for the soul. When you look at his pieces you feel a real connection to the wildlife and absorb the calming influence of nature. You cannot fail to be engaged by his whimsical style and skilled craftsmanship.
He has a wonderful eye for composition, form and playfulness and uses these skills to create some incredibly life like pieces of work - you can almost hear hearts beating. This is part of the real pleasure of Simon's work - the movement - the ability his pieces have to evoke emotion. Every wool sculpture is like hitting a momentary pause button - stopping wildlife in its tracks and telling of the real life tales going on this very minute in the hedgerows and countryside surrounding us.
Here is a small selection of Simon's work. You can find out more and follow him on instagram where he shows his finished work alongside some wonderful work in progress pictures!
