Christine Hsiao from Christine’s Creative Felting about Needle Felting

If you missed the last newsletter, here is what the fabulous Tatiana Trot has to say..!

1. What are your favourite needles to use?

My favourite needle is the Gauge 38 Star.

2. What is your favourite type of wool to work with?

My favorite type of wool is wool batts.

3. What is the worst piece of advice you keep hearing for needle felters?

I have actually never heard any bad advice. However if I have to list one, it is using armature. The technique is more advanced and better for experienced felters. Once the armature is built to the wrong proportion for the animal’s body and limbs, the sculpture outcome would be wrong. And it is very frustrating and difficult for felters to fix it from the set armature.

4. What common mistakes do people make when they start out?

I think a common mistake is applying too much wool in one area, which causes the wrong proportion and makes it symmetrically unbalanced.

5. What is the one thing a beginner could learn today that would make a difference to their work?

If you are going to sculpt an animal, it is better to search online and print out images of the project from different perspectives as reference. You should also draw the project, no matter if it is an animal or object, on a piece of paper first to understand the proportions and features. Doing such a task is really helpful for getting the ideas of colors, width, length, and characteristics at the beginning. Once you have a full comprehension of the elements or aspects, you will be able to felt easier and faster with harmony. Happy felting!
